SEAN DAVEY WEEKLY UPDATE FROM HAWAII’S NORTH SHORE

Winter really has set in with a vengence.

Just when we thought the bad weather had finally moved on, it just stepped back up a couple of notches. It’s howling on shore right now, but yet, they are actually running the O’Neill World Cup Surfing at Sunset. I guess that’s because we have 3 big wave episodes approaching, but with not very favourable winds - the third of which is supposed to arrive next Monday at around the 20 foot mark. It will be interesting to see what the coming week brings. In the meantime, enjoy these pictures from the past few days.

WOW…what a find!!! Just stumbled on this video by accident while doing some research on Bruce Weber’s work. It makes total sense that one of the world’s leading photographers was on the cutting edge in scouting the Casino in Asbury Park back then for his filming location. So awesome that this time in AP’s history is preserved by him in this commercial.

Not only is the Casino in it, but also some glimpses of The Empress, First Avenue Pavillion, and along the boardwalk & beach. The question is, do any of you remember them being here filming this and do any of Asbury’s own skaters appear in the ad?

Roller Girls Ready to Kick Some Ass at Convention Hall

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 28 | DOORS @ 7PM WHISTLE @ 8PM

Who will be the champions?

The Jersey Shore Roller Girls will host their roller derby league championship bout this Saturday, Nov. 28 at Asbury Park Convention Hall. The bout will determine whether the undefeated Right Coast Rollers or the challenger Murder Beach Militia team will be the 2009 league champions.

This bout doubles as a food drive for the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The public is encouraged to bring canned and boxed nonperishable food items anytime after 5 p.m. Nov. 28 to Convention Hall. Doors open for the roller derby bout at 7 p.m. and the game begins at 8 p.m.

The female athletes of the Right Coast Rollers and the Murder Beach Militia teams will serve up the fierce blocks and jams that roller derby is known for, as Asbury Park’s Convention Hall is transformed into a roller derby rink for an exciting league championship bout.

Both teams have prepared a night of derby mayhem in a full-length bout where the women don their derby personas and showcase their skills as skaters hit, dodge and block to get through the pack of skaters and score.

Roller derby is the newest, extreme sport for women rapidly sweeping the nation. Roller derby has been re-vamped into a flat-track version of the old-school style of a bank track. This is the real thing, not an orchestrated match-up. Jersey Shore Roller Girls, a league which formed more than two years ago, skates under the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rules and regulations.

As the second season closes with the Nov. 28 bout, the Jersey Shore Roller Girls have seen the league grow to include several dozen new skaters hoping to join the league’s three teams – Right Coast Rollers, Murder Beach Militia and Anchor Assassins. JSRG have hosted more than a dozen roller derby bouts at Convention Hall these past two years and welcome fans back for 2010’s bouts for more excitement and to see the sport continue to grow.

For tickets, visit the Jersey Shore Roller Girls online at www.jerseyshorerollergirls.net, or purchase the day of the bout for $20 at the door, $15 with military ID, $5 for childen 12 and under. 21 and over to drink.

A Thanksgiving Message from Jim Moriarty @Surfrider Foundation

Thanksgiving is a time when our homes are filled with the aromas of roasting turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. Year after year, we replicate the first Thanksgiving with our family and friends. You know the story - the Pilgrims, strangers in a strange land, landed on the beach (how apropos!) and through the friendship of the Native Americans, they survived the first year and celebrated the bountiful harvest with a feast.

It’s been your friendship that has sustained us. Your generosity has made Surfrider what we are today - a leader in the movement to protect our coasts. Thank you for being our friend. Together we’ve reached 123 coastal victories that helped make our beaches healthy and available to everyone.

We seek to be good stewards of your gifts, so we’ve done more with less during this tough economic year. In this video, our CEO Jim Moriarty explains what this mantra means for our grassroots efforts. Please take a moment to check it out and thank you again for your important support.
